After taking a year off in 2021, Carnaval Maine is back in 2022 for a 10-day event in mid-February in Portland.
Located on the Eastern Promenade, a 78-acre green space area overlooking Casco Bay, the event is modeled after Quebec City’s annual Carnaval — one of the largest and oldest winter events in the world, often attracting thousands.
The event kicks off on Feb. 17 with a Fire and Ice Gala. Guests arrive via the Narrow Gauge Railway to the ticketed event. Enjoy an array of libations made in Maine, paired with local cuisine.
New this year is the Norway Savings Bank Snow Stage, which will showcase live music during the evening hours such as “American Idol” alum Scotty McCreery and hometown favorite folk trio Ghost of Paul Revere. During the daytime, the stage will also host family-friendly performances such as circus acts and theatrics.
Head to the giant inflatable igloo to warm up with some bites and brews from local restaurants and Maine craft breweries. At the L.L. Bean WinterKids Fun Zone, children can take part in a number of activities including meandering through a snowshoe obstacle course and taking on a “Bean” bag toss.
Throughout the week, guests can watch live ice sculpture demonstrations as well as cheer on skiers and snowboarders as they take on competitors in the Nautilus Solar Rail Jam.
The event raises money for the Maine-based nonprofit, WinterKids, which helps children develop lifelong healthy habits through education and fun events.
So, grab some warm clothing and get ready for a fun event toasting nature’s chilliest season.
